Description |
This quilt is made of wool and cotton. The main design consists of 17" diameter hexagonal units pieced from approximately 2" diameter individual hexagons. An indigo blue hexagon is at the center of each large unit and is surrounded by peach, then blue-green, then lime-green and lavender borders made of hexagonal blocks. A row of red hexagons forms a common field between all the large hexagonal units. Each individual hexagon has two lines of self quilting. The quilt has a green wool border approximately 10.5" wide on all four sides. In this border is a grape vine of conventional applique. There are red and purple bunches of stuffed work grapes, stuffed green wool leaves, and corded green wool vines. The borders have .25" grid of quilting. The binding is tan/brown wool bias-cut tape. The backing is brown polished cotton. |
Notes |
This quilt was made by Keturah McElroy (1819-1858) of Lebanon, Ky. She crafted the quilt while pregnant with her fourth child, Katie, in 1858. She died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. She was the second wife of Harvey McElroy. Keturah McElroy was the donor's great grandmother and the quilt descended mother to daughter through the family. |
