Object Name Chandelier
Catalog Number 2005.25
Date 1848
Material(s) brass, glass
Description This is a large and ornate brass French chandelier. There are filigree chains running from a top point that is in a cluster of acanthus leaves design to the candlebra base. The base has 18 brass arms ending in candle holders. (Chandelier is now electrified.)
Notes The large and ornate French chandeliers were placed in the House and Senate of the building now known as the Old State Capitol when the building was first fitted with gas. First lit on July 3, the legislators’ excitement diminished as they discovered that the gas works produced “the most villainous compound of foul scents that human olfactory are ever subject to.” (Senate Journal, 1850-1851:831).
