Description This is a gold silk brocade dress with a blue and cream floral design. It is made of a bodice and a bustle skirt. The bodice has metal thread trim along the cuffs and down the front center opening and around the neck. These metal panels are accented by clusters of large black beads and rows of small black glass beads. The cuffs are made of dark brown silk. There are three different styles of metal buttons, all circular and the same size. The bodice is lined with white cotton and has boning in the front and back. The skirt is made of the same gold brocade with a front center panel of gold knit with metal thread accented by ten vertical rows of black glass beads. There is a brown silk underskirt with pleats. The bustle is an attached full length bustle made of the gold brocade and brown silk.
Notes This "second day" dress was worn by Ann Alexander of Alexander, Ill., in her 1880 marriage to James Sproule Deweese of Carroll County, KY. Donor, Marjorie Geary Anderson, is Alexander's granddaughter.
