Description This all cotton "Whig Rose" or "Rose of Sharon" quilt has a white background. The squares are approximately 23 inches wide. They are set on the diagonal, so that there are three partial squares on each edge and five full squares in the center. The design is applied in colored and printed cotton fabrics and is stuffed. The fabric has light damage and the colors may not be true to their original hue. There is a blue stem and red and yellow flower border that is approximately seven inches wide. On the main part of the quilt, the center square has no appliqué. There are four large blue, red, yellow flower designs in the remaining four full squares. In the center of the design is a flower with 12 petals in a light and dark pink printed fabric, a yellow-green center with a four pointed star in the center made of the dark pink print. Surrounding the flower are four large blue leaves. Between these sprouts a vine that splits to form two dark pink print flowers with a yellow center and two leaves each. The hand stitched quilting is done in white cotton thread and has an intricate pattern. There is a circle quilted around each large flower. The interior of the circle is quilted with a leaf along the edge, then small squares. The rest of the circle has contour stitches around the applied flowers. The center plain square is quilted with an intricate pattern using leaves, curved lines and squares. The rest of the quilt has primarily square quilting. The backing is plain white cotton fabric, slightly rougher than the front fabric. The quilt is edged with a narrow pieces of blue fabric.
