Description This tonguing plane has a wooden stock with a mortised handle and a rounded back edge. There are slightly chamfered side edges. The molded fence is secured to the fence arms with hand made screws. The fence arms are mortised through the stock and secured with captive wedges. There is an open throat at the top and there is a blade and bottom of stock slotted into tongue profile.
Notes Collected by the donor over the last 30 years from barns, storage sheds, and antique stores in north central Kentucky and probably southern Indiana and Ohio as well. Joseph Gilmer was listed as a plane maker in New Albany, IN 1848,1856,1859.A tonguing plane cut a tongue for use in tongue and groove joints
