Description This stethoscope has plated earpieces with a stamped brace and black rubber fittings. It has flexible black rubber tubes. It is a combination bell and diaphram stethoscope. The instrument shifted with a swiveling switch on the front.
Notes Dr. Joseph Laine (1879-1967) was born in Howard Creek, Clark County, Ky.; he attended Berea College and Meharry Medical College, graduating in 1906; he practiced medicine in Lexington beginning in 1908; in 1924 he established the Laine Clinic in Louisville; the instruments in the collection date from the 1920s through the 1950s. Dr. Laine evidently specialized in gynecology and obstretics, based on the contents of his bag; Dr. Laine was an active civic figure in Louisville, working for the Y.M.C.A., the Urban League, and the NAACP; he was featured in the exhibit "Afro-American Physicians in Lexington, 1895-1950."
