Description The subject of this portrait is John Brown. He is depicted with greying beard and hair wearing a black coat with a white collar. The portrait is signed on back -- painted by P.H. Davenport, 1860. Also Inscribed on the back of the canvas is "A Martyr to the cause of Freedom/John Brown, who/ was hung at Harper's Ferry Va./Dec. 2 1859 age 63 yrs."
Notes John Brown was born in 1800 and died by hanging in 1859.

Patrick Henry Davenport was born in 1803, Danville, Kentucky, and died in 1890.
