Notes This donation is very confused. The mourning hat (with box) and dress were supposed to have been worn by Anna Elizabeth Marsh at the death of her son in 1802, however the hat is not that old and Marsh was not born until the 1830s. The hatbox was previously dated as c. 1845 in Mimsy, however on close inspection the date 1883 is printed on the bottom. This date is more in line with the look of the hat, which was also previously identified as c. 1845. In lid of hatbox is a photograph that does look to date around 1860. This could possibly be the image of Anna Elizabeth Marsh and the owner was actually her daughter who was named Elizabeth (Lizzie) Marsh Lehman. The Kentucky Micacode index of 1910 shows that Lizzie married Daniel Lehman who was originally from Germany. The couple lived in Midway. D. Lehman and Sons constructed many of Midway's buildings including The Rau Building at Winter and Railroad St. (c.1882) and the John Graham House (aka "The Pines" built 1850-1874) which is listed on the National Reg. of Hist. Places. The name D. Lehman and the word "prepaid" is stamped on the bottom of the hatbox, implying that the hat was purchased by Lehman not the Marsh. Lizzie Lehman died in 1932. She had a son named William G. Lehman (b. 1870). William married Lillian T. (b. 1868). Their daughter Jeannette who was born in 1905, donated the collection. The other children in the family include Elizabeth, born 1902, William G, Jr. born 1907, and son Harold. The following was the old Notes section of Mimsy: Worn by Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Marsh of N.Y. following her son's death in 1802. (This needs confirmation.) It was worn as part of her mourning costume. Marsh was the mother of Mrs. Elizabeth Lehman of Midway who was born c. 1830. Elizabeth's granddaughter was Jeanette Lehman, the donor. Anna Elizabeth's maiden name or that of Anna's may have been Mertz.
