Description This is a rectangular burlap rug with hooked cotton flowers. It is unfinished although the design is drawn on. The sides of the rug are the selvedges and the top and bottom edges are folded under and machine stitched with black thread to make a hemmed edge. The pattern for the design of the rug is drawn directly onto the burlap with black ink or marker. The design begins six inches from the top and bottom and approximately five inches from each side. The design consists of a large rectangle divided into twenty squares (four squares by five squares). Each square has an L-shaped block traced in the corner. The center of each square has a floral design. Each block is different. Five of the blocks have hooked knit cotton flowers completed. The top row has three flowers in blocks completed (one blue, one pink, one yellow), the second row from the top has one pink flower completed on the far right side, and the lower right block on the bottom row has blue flowers completed and a black border done around the edges. On the back side of the burlap, there are three vertical red lines running down the right side of the rug. These lines have bled through and are visible on the front.
Notes This rug was created by Ethel M. Insko (b. 1903) who was born in Little Rock in Bourbon County. She was living in Fayette County, Kentucky when she made the rug.
