Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the Redwinged Starling or Marsh Blackbird from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. No. 14-3, Plate 216. It depicts four redwinged blackbirds of various ages that are perched upon branches of a maple tree that has starburst blooms. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Redwinged Starling or Marsh Blackbird, / Icterus Phoeniceus. Daud. / Adult Male, 1. Young Male, 2. Old Female, 3. Young Female, 4. / Pied Maple, or Swamp Maple. Acer rubrum." There are two signatures on the back in ink that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
