Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the now extinct Great Auk from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. No. 8-2, Plate 465. It depicts two Auks, one is swimming in the swirling water and the other is perched upon some rocky outcroppings. They have large black beaks with white stripes and white stomachs. They also have black backs and one white spot in front of the eyes and they have black webbed feet. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Great Auk / Alca Impennis, L." There are two signatures on the back in ink that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
