Description This dress is green, black and white plaid silk taffeta. The piece has a simple square neckline on the bodice (part a), with dropped shoulders. The sleeves are bell-shaped with three rows of brown fringe trim. The front closure has hidden hooks/eyes and three fancy decorative buttons down front, made of lopped green ribbon with a small circle covered in satin thread. Each button has several strands of green "balls" and white beads ganging from the bottom. The bodice is fitted and has nine stays in the white cotton lining. The bottom of the peplum has four points and is trimmed with a wide "band" of fringe. The skirt (part b) is on a green "finished" cotton waistband and has a white gathered cotton "waist insert." The skirt very full and the hem is finished with the same fabric found on the waistband. It is not lined.
Notes This dress was worn by Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" Haskins, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Breckinridge Payne. The family resided in Anchor and Hope Farm in Clark County, Kentucky, and Strawberry Hill Farm, in Fayette County, Kentucky.
