Description This black and white engraving features a thoroughbred horse at center with a tree in the right middle ground and a farm house and barn in the background. An inscription at the bottom includes the name of the horse: "Monmouth Eclipse," plus breeding details and artists' names.
Notes The horse Monmouth Eclipse was born in 1826.
This print was produced for the New York Spirit of the Times Magazine.

William T. Porter and his brothers started the Spirit of the Times in 1831. By 1839, the Spirit was the most popular sporting journal in the United States. By 1856, all of the Porter brothers were dead except William. The paper split at some point, one branch called the Spirit of the Times, the other Porter's Spirit of the Times.
