Description This is a "Hexagon Star" pattern quilt. It is a derivation of Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. The quilt is made 46 stars or flowers that comprised of solid colored silks, as well as ginghams, plaids, and stripes. Each star is bordered in black silk. This quilt has a dusty pink or mauve background and border. The quilt is hand-quilted. The background is quilted in diamond shaped grid pattern with each line of quilting being a double row of stitches. The binding is made of the same mauve silk, and it is machine-stitched. The backing is made of red cotton. The quilting extends down through a layer of batting, but the stitches are not full quilted through the backing of the quilt.
Notes According to a family letter, the donor's uncle Hanson Penn Diltz, age nine, put the pieces together. A piece of tin was cut to the size of a dime and used for the pattern. Carrie Diltz Elgin and Elizabeth Diltz Cushmen, sisters of Hanson, did most of the quilting during the Civil War to pass the time.
