Description This is an oval placemat made of pieced lace. The center medallion is of bobbin lace with a design that is made of four tulip shaped flowers joined in a circle. Two bands surround the medallion; the inner band is bobbin lace made with a bud design while the outer band is Torchon lace. Four bands radiate from the center medallion. The bands are all of Alencon lace with two designs used; one design is a floral vine and the other is a spiral. The bands create four fields of Alencon lace; each field contains inserts of bobbin lace in floral designs. There are four tatted medallions inserted at the top and bottom. The placemat is bordered by two bands of lace; the inner band is a Valenciennes bobbin lace with a dotted design while the outer band is a bobbin lace with a scalloped edge.
Notes The place mat or center piece was made by the donor's mother-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Shackleford Mock; made in the early 1900's in Millersburg and Ashland,Ky.
