Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the Brown Pelican from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. No. 12-1, Plate 423. It depicts a whitish-green pelican with a green neck and head with a white and yellow stripes. It has gray webbed feet and is sitting on a tree limb. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S., F.L.S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Brown Pelican / Pelecanus Fuscus / Male Adult". On the reverse side are two signatures in ink that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
