Object Name Dress
Catalog Number 1978.48.1
Date ca. 1910
Material(s) Linen
Dimensions H-55 W-13 inches
Description This white linen dress is made of a light weight fabric much like organza. It has 3/4 length sleeves, rounded neck and floor length skirt with no train. The bodice has a ruffle attached over the shoulders. Lace is inset at the breast, cuffs, and two long pieces of lace from shoulder to hem. The simple hem has no decoration.
Notes According to donation records, this dress was used with petticoat 1978.48.2 by Belle Bushond Croxton of Bourbon Co., Ky., in her marriage to Harvy Hibler in 1869. The design of both dress and petticoat however do not support this information. Further research indicates that Belle and Harvy Hibler were married in September 1881. The dress appears to be more of a 1910 fashion and not a formal wedding dress. It is possible that the family mistook the white dress as a wedding dress when wedding dresses of the mid and late 19th century are often not white.
