Description This is a chromolithographic print of two separate images based on life studies by J. J. Audubon for the Bien edition of "Birds of America." The Image on the left depicts a small White Crowned Sparrow resting on a grapevine with two large, green, heart-shaped leaves behind it. Just below this small bird is the head of a female poking out from behind the lower leaf. There are dark blue grapes in two clusters, one connecting the birds visually and the other just at the bottom of the image. The top left corner reads, "No. 10-5." and the top right corner reads, "PLATE 192." Just below on the bottom left reads, "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F. R. S., F. L. S." The legend centered just below the image reads, "White Crowned Sparrow/ FRINGILLA LEUCOPHRUS/ Male 1. Female 2./ Summer Grape Vitis Estivatus." The Right image depicts two White Throated Sparrows resting on a branch of a dogwood tree. The lower bird is a brightly colored male while the other depicts a more subdued hued female. Just above her are three blooms of white flowers. The Top left reads "No. 10-6" and the top right reads "PLATE 101." Just below the image on the lower right reads "Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860." The centered legend of the image reads, "White Throated Sparrow/ FRINGILLA PENNSLYVANICA, Lath/ Male 1. Female 2./Dog-wood Cornus florida." Signed on the back are two faded signatures, "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher."
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
