Description This is a rag carpet runner. The alternating bands are tan, yellow, black, pink, blue, and various cotton prints. The tan bands are the most wide at about seven inches. The pink and blue bands are narrow. The rug has pink and yellow cotton string warp and has a tied fringe on the top and bottom. There is an unfinished selvedge on the sides.
Notes Handwoven rag rugs like this were very common in houses during the first half of the nineteenth century. These colorful rugs used fabric remnants for economical and decorative floor covering, especially in less formal, private spaces like bedrooms.
