Description This grooving plane is made of beech. It has a handle with wing mortised into top behind the iron. The top edges are chamfered in the front and back. The heel is rounded. There is an adjustable fence secured with captive wedges and guided by two dowels mortised through the body. The plane has a steel depth gauge screwed to the side of the sole. The iron is a standard 5/16" wide and is held in place with a wooden wedge iron. The maker's mark is stamped in the toe.
Notes Joseph Gilmer was listed as a planemaker in New Albany, Indiana in 1848, 1856, and 1859. He was age 41 in 1850.
