Description This is a wooden compass. The main body is a U shaped rod of bent oak with arms squared in middle, oval at the curve, and rounded at the tips. There are rectangular mortises in both squared areas. There is a wooden bar pinned into one mortise with bent over cut nail and wedged in the other. There are iron spurs in a hole in each tip. One tip has copper wire wrapped around it. It has been refinished with a clear finish.
Notes Old card, "From the boyhood home, in Magoffin County, of the late Dr. F.A. Millard. Made by John B. Millard, Dr. Millard's father." Donor is F.A. Millard's daughter. John B. Millard was born December 3, 1858, in KY and died on September 2, 1937. A white farmer listed in the 1880 Magoffin Co. Census, he married Mary Millard(1859-1928).
