The Egret on the left is a young two year old in his spring plumage of solid white. It has green legs and a yellow beak with a black point. The egret on the right is an adult male in his spring plumage of blue wings and feet and a red and grey head and neck. The adult is standing in the water with his right leg uplifted. The young is standing on the shoreline against large green and leafy plants. Across the shoreline in the distance are tail grasses and beyond that is a thickly clouded sky. Writing above the image, the upper left corner reads, "No. 5-2." and the upper right corner reads "PLATE 371." Below the image in the lower left corner reads, "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F.
