Description This is a handmade continental smoothing plane with a wood stock. The sides are irregular and the "horn" handle is mortised into the front of the stock and is secured by a bent-over cut nail. There are tool marks visible in the shavings aperature. There is a short hand-carved wedge and a triangular insert nailed into the stock in front of the mouth.
Notes Also called German pattern: produced in US but never popular with American craftsmen. Collected by the donor from antique stores, barns, etc. in southern Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky over the last thirty years.
