Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the Arctic Tern and Sandwich Tern from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. The image that is turned horizontally is of the Sandwich Tern. No. 4-6, Plate 434. It depicts a seabird with a long sharp bill that is standing on one webbed foot to the left of a crayfish on a sea shore. The ocean is in the background. The legend beneath this image reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Sandwich Tern / Sterna Cantiaca. Lath / Florida Cray Fish". The vertical image is of an Arctic Tern. No. 4-5, Plate 434. It depicts a seabird that is diving. The seabird is white with an orange curved bill, webbed feet and a black upper head. The legend beneath this image reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Arctic Tern / Sterna Arctica." On the back are two signatures in ink that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
