Description This is a newspaper clipping cut out front page of the November 4, 1948 issue of the Chicago Daily Tribune with a banner headline proclaiming a Harry Truman victory over Republican Thomas Dewey in the 1948 presidential race: "IT'S TRUMAN BY 1,500,000." This issue was a retraction of the paper's declaration on 11/03/1948 that "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN".
Notes Democrat Harry S. Truman won his only full term as President in 1948 in an upset over Republican Thomas Dewey. Early returns indicated a Dewey victory and one of the most compelling images of the election was a jubilant Harry Truman holding aloft a Chicago paper announcing Dewey's "victory."
