Description This is a white hand-woven cotton coverlet is woven in "Original Governor's Garden" pattern. The pattern is one of a strip of diamonds with a solid rectangle alternating with a strip of horizontal bars. The width of the strips varies in a regular pattern. It is woven possibly from homespun with 2-3" deep fringe at bottom and sides. The coverlet is made of three panels hand stitched together.
Notes According to family tradition, the coverlet was made for Mary Strange McDaniel (1804-1885) by slaves. McDaniel and her husband, Rev. Gideon McDaniel, were married in 1823 in Virginia and moved to Warren County, Kentucky in 1832. The coverlet was included in their daughter Sophie's trousseau in 1860.
