Description This is a simple butt gauge with a sliding cutter arm. The main body has a curved wooden butt fence mortised onto U-shaped frame with tongues cut on the insides of the frame members. The sliding arm has grooves cut on the sides and fits onto tongues in the frame. The wing nut and bolt on the end of the frame threads through a hollow slot in the sliding arm. The rectangular wedge holds the cutting iron in the mortise in the sliding arm.
Notes Used to make a mark out from a stop, i.e., when hanging doors or shelves. Collected by the donor from antique stores, barns, etc. in southern Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky over the last thirty years.
