Description This is a stainless steel uterine probe with flattened handle. The piece has a long thin shaft with 90 degree and a curving tip. The piece is stamped on handle, "21/BUNTIN/14."
Notes Dr. Joseph Laine (1879-1967) was born in Howard Creek, Clark County, Ky.; he attended Berea College and Meharry Medical College, graduating in 1906; he practiced medicine in Lexington beginning in 1908; in 1924 he established the Laine Clinic in Louisville; the instruments in the collection date from the 1920s through the 1950s. Dr. Laine evidently specialized in gynecology and obstretics, based on the contents of his bag; Dr. Laine was an active civic figure in Louisville, working for the Y.M.C.A., the Urban League, and the NAACP; he was featured in the exhibit "Afro-American Physicians in Lexington, 1895-1950."
