Description This molded tin nutmeg grater is constructed of three pieces. The grating surface is arched outwards and is wider at the top than the bottom. The top portion does not have the rough surface but is smooth and has a hinged lid which with the back flat piece of tin forms a compartment to hold the nutmeg. The back piece has a hole at the top for hanging, a slotted area at the nutmeg compartment, and a concave design similar to an hourglass at the bottom. "50[cents]" is handwritten in black on the back.
Notes Identical to graters pictured in the 1895 Montgomery Wards catalog and the 1903 Sears Roebuck catalog. Collected by the donor from antique stores, barns, etc. in southern Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky over the last thirty years.
