Description This is an engraving of John Lothrop Motley after a photograph of him. He is depicted staring fixedly to left with full beard. He wears a dark coat with right breast pocket, a high necked vest with watch chain, and a white shirt with a turned down collar and cravat.
Notes Motley (1814-1877) wrote The Rise of the Dutch Republic, New York, A.L. Burt, 1898. He was considered the historian of the Netherlands. Sartain was born (1808) and trained in London, England, moving to Philadelphia in 1830. A noted engraver, he produced close to 1500 mezzotints(steel engravings) during his career. He died in 1897.
