Description This is a Victorian side chair. It is made of black walnut and has a woven circular cane seat. There are two turned stretchers in the front and on the sides. There is one stretcher in the back. The crest rail has a carved rose design. There are scrolled side braces/arms. The front legs are turned and the rear legs are cabriole-shaped.
Notes This chair was made by the donor's grandfather, Thomas Marion Stevens, born ca. 1833. Stevens settled with his wife, Missouri Yelton Stevens, in a log home on Plum Creek near Alexandria, KY. According to the donor, the chairs were used with the dining table (1988.15.6.) The donor stated in a letter that this chair is made of "magnificent Kentucky trees of long ago."
