Description This two-piece brown, silk afternoon dress has a striped pattern with wide brown stripe bordered on each side, with a dark brown stripe running modified clover shapes with cream edging. An alternating stripe with solid brown is a ribbon strip of dark brown with a diamond background and bunches of flowers. The piece has a round neckline with lace collar and a center front closure with fifteen hooks and eyes fasteners. There are eight buttons that decorate the front with two long darts on each side. The bodice (part a) comes to a point at the middle front. The back of the bodice has curved seams and comes to a point at the center back and to points on sides over the hips. It is trimmed with fringe. The sleeves are pleated at the top and set in with thin piping. The pleats are fluffed and gathered, and are spread out at the bottom of a two-tier sleeve into a bell shape. The sleeve layers are trimmed with fringe. There are seven buttons around the sleeve near the shoulder seam. The skirt (part b) is unlined and of the same fabric. The skirt has a very full gather with pinch or pin pleats to the waistband, which has an added muslin support. The waistband is brown polished cotton, with one pocket.
Notes This dress was worn by Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" Haskins, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Breckinridge Payne. The family resided in Anchor and Hope Farm in Clark County, Kentucky, and Strawberry Hill Farm, in Fayette County, Kentucky.
