Date ca. 1860
Dimensions H-14 W-34.5 D-18 inches
Description This small trunk is made of wood. The lid is domed. It is covered with tanned deer hide that still has the hairs on it. Most of the hair has worn off, but is still visible on the front and where some of the brass tacks that hold the hide on the wood frame have come off. The brass tacks are located on the front and side of the lid, the bottom edge of the lid, and the sides of the front and back lower panel. There is also a grouping of three tacks on the proper left and four on the proper right. Hand wrought nails hold the other edges. There is a thin metal handle on top and a metal lock on the front, and two metal hinges on the back. The interior is covered with newspapers. There is no visible date, but the illustrations reflect the mid-19th century.
Notes A Frazee's patented portable sawmill advertised in one of the newspapers inside the trunk was patented in 1853. Source: Louisiana Courier, 1856.
