Description This is a collection of four weaving drafts drawn by Mary Jane Overton. All appear to have been drawn for use with a four harness loom. They do not contain a separate treadling draft so they are assumed to be tromp-as-writ.

Number 1 is described as a "dimity draft." It has four horizontal lines with vertical lines dividing each sequence. There are 57 sequences in this pattern. Hash marks on the lines indicate treadling. The paper has yellowed and the pattern was drawn in black ink now faded to brown. The paper is sewn together with string.

Number 2 is not identified by the artist on the front of the draft. There are 42 sequences in this pattern. It is drawn exactly like number 1. The paper and ink are similar to pattern number 1. Reverse reads, "A. Mary Jane Pine Top draft."

Number 3 is described as a "dimity drafte." The pattern reads: "A dimity drafte tramp too for the plain one for the dimity." The draft is also signed "Mary Jane Overton." It is drawn in the same manner as numbers 1 and 2. There are 84 sequences in this pattern. The paper is slightly blue and the pattern is drawn in blue ink. The paper is sewn together with string. On reverse are portions of a writing exercise repeating, "Williams/Captain/New Orleans/Camden."

Number 4 is described as a Double Bowknot pattern. The pattern reads: "A drafte of the double bow not drawn by Mary Overton december 15 1850." The pattern is similar to those above but the hash marks are replaced with numbers. There are 62 sequences in this pattern. The paper has darkened and the black ink has faded to brown. Written on reverse, "To Mill/Overton/Adair/Columbia." Also has a postal stamp reading "Winchester/May/23."
Notes These drafts were drawn by Mary Jane Overton in 1850. Mary Jane Overton was born ca.1813, probably in Mercer or Fayette County, the daughter of James Collins Overton and Maria Simpson Overton. She married Dewitt Clinton Barrett soon after the completion of these drafts. In 1850, she lived with her husband in Frankfort with their three children. According to the 1880 census, Mary Jane Overton was 56 years old. This makes her likely birth date about 1824. It is also noted that her spouses name is Clinton D. Barrett. At that date Paul and Florence still lived in the same household on Main Street in Frankfort, KY.
