Description This is a dark stained mortise gauge--probably factory made. It has a possibly rosewood stem with a groove in the bottom for a fixed spur on the end. There is an adjustable brass rail holding a second spur. The adjustable rail and its thumbscrew are missing. The fence has a brass insert around the steel adjustment screw. There is a "bullseye" pattern mounting or rivet on either side of the stem.
Notes Collected by the donor over the last 30 years from barns, storage sheds and antique stores in north central Kentucky and probably southern Indiana and Ohio as well. A mortice gauge has two spurs instead of one, to mark the double parallel lines showing the position of a mortice & tenon.
