Description This is a "Diamond Mosaic" pattern quilt. There are four rows of five diamonds and three rows of four diamond. The diamond mosaic sections are made of floral and plain wool alternated with floral at the center. Some have dark green on the outer layer others have black. Some of the black pieces are silk. The borders are separated by small red diamonds. Outside of the floral diamonds are partial diamonds of only green, light green, and red fabric that meet the border. The quilt has a black and red striped border. A red stripe seven inches wide has a black stripe 1 1/4 inches wide on the inside and a black stripe 1 3/4 inches on the outside. The border is quilted with a feathered swag and approximately 1/4" grid pattern. The back of the quilt is made of red and black stripe paisley wool bordered with three alternating black-red-black stripes. The quilt has a wool filler, and it is possibly hand carded. There is no binding.
Notes This quilt may have been made by Laura Hemphill Oxley (1845-1921) or one of Laura's sister or family members. Laura Hemphill Oxley was the daughter of Andrew Hemphill and Mildred Tapp. Laura married Jefferson Oxley. The Oxley family is interred at Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana.
