Description This is a primitive guttering plane. It is slightly asymmetrical in section. There is a wooden stock with a gracefully curved handle morticed into the heel and top. A wide shallow groove runs diagonally down the center of both sides. The shavings outlet is cut completely through the stock. It has a round profile sole and iron with a wide wedge. The handle and wedge possibly cherry.
Notes Possibly a gutter plane used to hollow out gutters, troughs, and similar long workpieces, or a gunstocking plane used to hollow out the stock to accept the barrel. This is very likely a homemade piece. Collected by the donor over the last thirty years from barns, storage sheds, and antique stores.
