Description This image is from Godey's Ladies' Book. There are five women depicted standing in a garden with a house in the background on the left, a fountain in the center and on the right. From the left: There is a young woman standing facing to the viewer's right. She is wear a dress with blue highlights. Her cap has a blue ribbon across the front and one hanging down the side. Her dress has blue stripes on the sleeve at the shoulder and the cuff. There is a blue collar and an overskirt that is colored blue in the front. The over skirt (longer in the back than in the front) has a ruffle or fringe that has alternating areas of blue. The dress has buttons on the front of the overskirt and up the front of the dress to the collar. The bottom of the skirt is has blue colored ribbon design. Next to her is a seated woman. Her dress is highlighted in red. She is wearing a red ribbon in her hair and the bodice of her dress is trimmed in red. The bodice has lace ribbons on the front and along the sleeves. The sleeves have red vertical ribbons at the shoulders and she is wearing a red belt. The skirt is plain with a ruffle at the bottom that has alternating red vertical stripes. In the center is a woman wearing a tan colored dress. She has a red flower on the proper left side of her head. The dress has a small lace collar and matching braid around the bottom of the bodice, around the waist and at the end of the sleeve. The bodice has buttons from the waist to the collar. The skirt is plain with a scalloped hem that a rope-like edge. There are decorative elements made of the roping at the points of the scallop. There is a dark ruffle showing at the bottom of the skirt. To her left is a woman facing away from the viewer. She is wearing a green dress with a greek key design on the sleeves at the shoulders and long the side panels of th skirt. She has her hair in a chignon and is wearing a ruffled hat with a lace front. The back of the skirt has flaps turned back and fastened with floral shaped buttons. The last woman on the right has her back to the viewer. She is wearing a gray dress with a large lace collar. There are lappets at the waist that have a "x" design with tassels at the bottom. The sleeves and the seams on the back of the bodice have a braid-like decoration. The skirt is open in the front to reveal a white underskirt that appears to have a tall lace edging at the bottom. The woman is wearing a green ribbon in her hair.
Notes Godey's Lady's Book, alternatively known as Godey's Magazine and Lady's Book, was a American magazine that was published in Philadelphia. It was the most widely circulated magazine in the period before the Civil War. The magazine was intended to entertain, inform and educate the women of America. The magazine ceased publication in 1898.
