Description This is a chromolithograph of a Crested Grebe from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. The image depicts two waterfowl swimming on a placid lake, with land dimly seen in the distance behind them. Both have charcoal brown bodies and white neck. The adult male on the right has a rusty black crest and white head. Its plumage on the wings are also of a brownish hue. In the upper left it reads, "No. 6-4" and the upper right reads, "PLATE 389." The lower left corner reads, "Drawn by J. J. Audubon, F.R. S., F. L. S." and the lower right reads, "Chromolithy by J. Bien, New York 1860." The legend centered below the image reads, "Crested Grebe/ PODICEPS CRISTATUS. Lath./Audlt male spring plumage, 1. Young first Winter, 2." There are two signatures signed in faded brown ink on the back, "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher."
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
