|Description||This is a metal bustle hoop with cotton tapes. At the waist is a cotton waistband that appears to originally have had a buckle closure. There are two metal eyelets in the middle of the waistband in the front. Below the waistband but in the front is a series of seven metal strips fastened together with the same cotton tapes--one on each end and three in the middle. The three in the middle are attached to the waistband by a three heavy-duty cotton tapes. The wires are attached to the cotton tapes (both on the sides and in the middle) with metal staple-like devices. The bottom waist wire is attached by a reinforced strip of heavy cotton. On the end pieces is attached a corset-like fabric that was used to cinch the hoop at the waist. There are metal eyelets where the corset was cinched and there are also metal eyelets where the fabric is attached to the body of the hoop. The back of the hoop from the waist to the lower section is open to make room for the bustle. The back of the bottom part of the hoop is made up of cotton tape (1 1/2 inches wide) woven into a basket weave pattern. There are fifteen wire strips covered in fabric that make up the front of the lower half of the hoop. The bottom two hoops are a larger flat metal. All seventeen metal strips creates a 3/4 hoop (the back being left open for the bustle and being held together with the basket weave of twill tape. There are five strips of cotton fabric connecting the metal strips and the strips are attached to the fabric with the metal staple-like devices.|
Based on family genealogy this hoop probably belonged to the great-grandmother Mary G. Long Byrne.
