Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the American Flamingo from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. No. 8-1, Plate 375. It depicts a bright red-pink colored Flamingo on a wetlands shore in the foreground. There are eight pink and white Flamingoes in the background. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / American Flamingo / Phoenicopterus Ruber, Linn / Old Male". There are two signatures in ink on the back that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909. Conserved in spring of 1975 by Mary Todd Glaser. Bleached by locally applied agent, clean superficially to remove grime, backed with mulberry paper and flattened.
