Description This is a crazy quilt made of satins, silks, and velvets with decorative stitches and embroidery. The top of this quilt is made of 20 pieced blocks, and it is four blocks wide by five blocks tall. Each block is made up of a variety of colorful fabrics in solids, plaids, stripes, polka dots, florals, and other prints. The edges of the piecework and blocks have colorful decorative stitches such as feather, fly, blanket, and herringbone. The cotton or wool thread is blue, pink, orange, green, red, brown, purple, white, gray, and brown. Several of the blocks embroidered or appliquéd designs featuring a bird bath, balloons, moons, umbrellas, and bells. There are two appliquéd paper birds with stuffing behind them to create a three-dimensional look. There are four small white patches on this quilt with the following names written in cursive: Carrie Smith, Lizzie Mannen, Lucy Thomas and Martha Ryan. The binding is made of a gold satin and is machine-stitched. The quilt backing is made of rust colored polished cotton.
Notes This quilt belonged to Anna Eliza Kirk Kaighn and Phillip T. Kaighn of Augusta and Maysville, Kentucky. Phillip T. Kaighn was born in Loudoun County, Virginia in May 1838. Anna Eliza Kirk Kaighn was born in December 1838. There seem to be two marraige dates: December 31, 1859 and January 2, 1860. The marriage was registered in Mason County, Kentucky.
