Description This quilt is a double Irish chain pattern. It has navy blue with white flower print fabric on a white cotton background. Blue and white squares 2 3/16 inch in size are set on point and surround large white pieces. They form the chains of which there are four vertical and six horizontal. These white pieces are a blunt cross shape, 11 ½ inch by 11 ¼ inch, and are plain homespun white cotton. There are 20 full white blocks and 22 partial blocks. The backing is plain homespun white cotton. The quilt is edged with a narrow band of the blue print. There is a light batting layer between. The large pieces are hand quilted in fan in ½ inch rows of stitching. The small squares are hand quilted in ½ inch rows of straight stitches.
Notes This quilt was made about 1846 by Miss Margaret Shanks of Lincoln County, Kentucky. Margaret Shanks Owsley was born on Feb. 6, 1796. She married Thomas Owsley (1792-1889) on Sept. 15, 1815. They had a son named William Owsley (1825-1832). Margaret Owsley died on Sept. 20, 1867.
