Description This is a plated steel bivalve anal speculum. It has slotted blades separated by handles. A set screw inside secures the position of the ridged, spring loaded grips. It is stamped "WOCHER."
Notes Dr. Joseph Laine (1879-1967) was born in Howard Creek, Clark County, Kentucky. He attended Berea College and Meharry Medical College, graduating in 1906. He practiced medicine in Lexington beginning in 1908. In 1924 he established the Laine Clinic in Louisville. The instruments in the collection date from the 1920s through the 1950s. Dr. Laine evidently specialized in gynecology and obstetrics, based on the contents of his bag. Dr. Laine was an active civic figure in Louisville, working for the Y.M.C.A., the Urban League, and the NAACP. He was featured in the exhibit "Afro-American Physicians in Lexington, 1895-1950."
