Description This is a bust portrait of an elderly Daniel Boone. He has grey hair and eyes and is wearing a light brown jacket with dark brown fur trim, a pink vest, with a white shirt. The background is dark grey and green.
Notes Boone was born in 1734 and died in 1820. Nicola Marschall (1829-1917) was born in Prussia, immigrated to Alabama in 1849 and died in 1917. Credited with designing the first Confederate national flag. He moved to Louisville in 1873 and opened a portrait studio. He was a prolific painter, often traveling to Versailles, Lexington and the south. The file indicates that the artist based his image on an earlier portrait that was done by Chester Harding in 1903 which is in the collection of the Filson Society, Louisville, KY. The file states the painting was purchased by the Society from the artist for $137.50.
