Description This is a handmade wooden toy train car made from 1/8" stock. The two carriages are nailed on the bottom with cut nails, each with two simple wheels held on with cut nail and tinplate washers. There are two doors cut in each side of the train car. The curved roof is held on with cut nails and string binding. The base extends at the front and back to form platforms. There are two holes in each platform for coupling, pull rope, or railing.
Notes Family tradition held that the boxcar was made for donor's uncle, Clifton Lewis Thompson, Jr.(9/14/1904--9/25-1963), of Lexington. Thompson grew up to be a laundry executive. The car's construction, however, suggests that the car might have belonged originally to his father, Clifton Lewis Thompson(1874-1943) a drygoods merchant and laundry executive from Scott County.
