|Notes||In 1940 Willkie was nominated by the Republican party to run for the presidency against Roosevelt, who had aroused great opposition by seeking a third term. Willkie's running mate was Charles Linza McNary, senator from Oregon and Senate minority leader after 1932. Despite a vigorous campaign and a popular vote of 22,321,018, Willkie was defeated.|
