Description This is a Hitchcock-style fancy chair. It is painted with a black enamel over a red primer to resemble rosewood. There are gold stencils of fruit and flowers on backrest and stylized grain sheaves on posts. The chair has turned crest rails, legs, and stretchers. There are two stretchers on the sides, one on the front and one on the back. It has a woven seat.
Notes This chair was purchased for the Old Capitol Restoration Project in the 1970s. Lambert Hitchcock inspired this variety of fancy chair with his mass-produced stenciled chairs produced in Riverton, CT, circa 1820-1850.
