Bodice (A): This bodice is made of a cream silk fabric with a floral pattern that has a blue design spread among the flowers. The bodice has a 14 hook and eye front closure. There's boning on the inside of the bodice one on each side of the closure. There are two more stays on each side of the bodice. There are five bones/stays in the back of the bodice. The collar and the bottom of the bodice is trimmed with blue and white cording. The long sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and finished at the cuffs with tatted lace. The sleeves are also gathered in two areas with bands of the wrapped cording.
Skirt (B) The skirt is made from the same floral fabric. The waist band is reinforced with muslin. The closure is in the back but is missing the hooks and eyes. The skirt is not lined and has a 6 inch hem.
The summer bodice (C) is made of a light muslin with one bone/stay at each side. The front closure would have had 12 hooks but the hooks and eyes are missing. The band at the shoulders is made with strip of the floral and blue fabric and is finished with a blue silk ribbon at the top. The arm holes are trimmed with the silk ribbon and scraps of the floral fabric.
Scarf (D) is a triangular shaped piece made up of three pieces of the floral and blue fabric. It is hemmed on all sides.
Lace (E) This is a strip of cream colored bobbin lace with a floral and leaf design.
Remnants (G): Nine pieces of the floral and blue fabric and one of the trim are stitched together.
Undersleeves (H): Two undersleeves made of the floral and blue fabric are finished at the cuffs but not at the other end. They are stitched together.
|Notes||This outfit was worn by Mary Miller Stephens (ca. 1840-1925) as a young girl. Mary Stephens was the grandmother of the donor, Mary Miller Spears Van Meter.|
