Description This is an engraving of Jefferson Davis from a daguerreotype. Davis is depicted in a frock coat, vest, shirt with studs, upturned collar, and cravat. In small text directly below the image, it reads "Engraved by J.C. Buttre from a Daguerreotype." Below, there is a facsimile Jefferson Davis signature. The number "400" is stamped on the reverse. "#21" is written in pencil in the upper right corner.
Notes John Chestre Buttre (1821-1893) was a line engraver of good reputation with an extensive New York engraving business. Davis(1808-1889) was a Mississippi army officer, planter, and politician who was elected president of the Confederacy in 1861. Davis was born in Kentucky.
